VE Day 80th Anniversary

The Harris Irwin team marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day with a street-party lunch in the courtyard at Aske Stables.  We celebrated the momentous occasion with other businesses in the Aske Estate so there was a truly joyous and community feel to the event.

Decked out with bunting, Union Jack flags and a delicious spread of food, everyone ‘got in the mood’ with the 1940s playlist, with many wearing something red, white and/or blue. While it was a great time to celebrate, it was also a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who lived through the Second World War and stories were shared of family members who were involved.

We remembered those who lost their lives with the Last Post, followed by a two-minute silence and the Reveille. We were privileged that Allan Guy, of Purple Creative played for us – it was a poignant and thought-provoking time as the rich timbre of his cornet resonated around the courtyard to honour the brave men and women who fought for our freedom.

We are most grateful to Lord Ronaldshay, Kathryn and the Aske Estate team for all their support in making this happen. Thank you to everyone who came together, contributed to the VE lunch and shared in our celebration of this significant anniversary that led to the Allied victory and to honour those who sacrificed so much to protect our democracy.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.
